January 2010
Happy New Year!
Are there changes you want to make toward improving your life? Have you made any resolutions? The New Year provides an opportunity for us to evaluate the passing year and to make plans for the year ahead. Even though every moment is an opportunity for a fresh start, the start of the calendar year is a popular time.
Our culture, as a whole, encourages these efforts. Unfortunately, statistics show a high failure rate with New Year's resolutions. Why do our best intentions to change for the better lose their power as the year progresses? I believe it isn't for a lack of effort, but for a lack of love.
Self-improvement is high on everyone's list and covers a wide variety of changes. It may be that we want to stop a destructive habit, organize our environment, or manage our finances more wisely. We may decide that 2010 is the year for healthier relationships, or for more financial prosperity. But, what is motivating these resolutions? So often our desire to change is motivated by self-disgust, self-loathing, and shame. We literally try to hate or shame ourselves into changing. Shame and disgust are short-lived and destructive forces. Love, by contrast, is a powerful force that can sustain the motivation to change.
A common resolution is weight loss. If your resolution is to lose weight, try loving your body instead of hating the extra pounds. We have a tendency to focus on or give more power to what we don't want (hate) instead of what we desire (love). Partner with your body, and when you feel hungry ask your body what it wants. Remember, to choose foods for someone you love. Similarly, creating a healthy romantic partnership begins with you. Love yourself the way you desire to be loved, and you will attract a partner who recognizes your worth and loves you in kind.
Love is the greatest force on this planet. Children who grow up knowing they are loved tend to be healthier, better adapted adults. Similarly, love is the foundation to propel us into healthier styles of self-care.
Patience, acceptance, and compassion are all attributes of love. Consider giving yourself these gifts daily in 2010 and watch your world change.
Love sets our energy free. It opens us and puts us in a flow with spirit and life on many levels. Love is the true secret behind manifestation. (David Spangler)
