Child Within
Through my work, I am coming to understand that our physical and energetic bodies store experiences like a computer hard drive. This energy field contains every thought, person, and experience (including other lifetimes) that we have encountered. This means that inside of us are perspectives we have had at all the ages we have lived. In other words, elements of us as an infant, toddler, adolescent, teenager, etc., are all present. Furthermore, it seems that experiences and events with strong emotional components make an especially large impression in our psyches and if left unresolved can remain in a holding pattern awaiting resolution.
A reoccurring theme that surfaces during healing sessions and phone readings is the unmet need and/or the unexpressed emotions of the "inner" child. While exploring particular challenges that a client may be having, I often see a younger version of that person followed by a numerical age. This identified moment in time is usually significant for them and often corresponds to a death, divorce or some other traumatic event. Present day events can trigger similar emotions from the past. I once read that unexpressed emotions never disappear but get "buried alive" waiting for opportunities to be released. As children we don't always have the tools or the opportunities to express ourselves. We may be in an environment where it isn't safe or we may not have the support to guide us or the cognitive skills to respond to our emotions. As an adult, an event may trigger unexpressed emotions that our ten year old self, for instance, is still holding. The ten year old then joins us in responding to the current event, sometimes even trying to run the show.
The remedy I am guided to recommend is called re-parenting. I suggest to my clients that they picture themselves at that age experiencing the event. I suggest they become the "ideal" parent--skilled, supportive and loving. It is helpful to give that child a voice, letting them vent or ask questions. One way of doing this is by arranging two chairs, one for you now and one for your "past" self. When you are in the chair of the "past" speak as if you are them. From the other chair, speak as a supportive and loving adult. It is amazing how alive that child can be inside of us. Complete the exercise by reassuring your child that you, the adult, are in charge and she/he is safe and unconditionally accepted. Then go do something that gives you joy and comfort. This practice can be repeated for as many events and experiences that still hold strong emotional charges or have left you feeling incomplete. When the backlog of emotions is lovingly given the space to be expressed and released you become more integrated and whole to manage present day situations.
