Soul Mate

I have recently reconnected with someone whom I have known all my life--someone whom on occasion I have ignored, taken for granted, and sometimes even abused. She is loyal, hard working, highly intelligent, flexible, adaptable and playful. I have to admit, I have said some pretty unkind things to her, but she has always forgiven me. Who is this beautiful person you may ask? My body!

I am in the process of reconnecting, mending and re-establishing a new relationship with my body, and I am benefitting immensely. Most people consciously desire good health. They want to thrive and experience vitality. Yet, in our American culture our relationship with our bodies tends to border on dysfunction resulting in disease, discontentment and fatigue. In fact, very often the only time we pay attention to our physical body is when it is seemingly not cooperating with us.

I began thinking, if my body were considered my partner or my spouse, how would I assess my relationship with it? Would we be happily evolving together experiencing frequent newlywed moments? Or, would we be one of those couples who barely notices one another coming together only in perfunctory moments? Would our relationship be inspiring to others or would we be a drain to those around us? Since we cannot divorce our bodies without dying in the process, how can we mend or strengthen our relationship to our body?

Here are a couple of suggestions:

Accept your body just the way it is. Learn more about your body. For instance, I printed an anatomical picture of the inner workings of my body and now have more respect for the miraculous design. After all, the body is spirit in physical form--slower moving, divine energy constantly working to achieve balance and wellness. What is not to love? It is a great partner! It loves to communicate with us. It keeps us safe and warm. It cools us down when we get hot. It takes out the trash. It even works on our behalf while we sleep. It loves comfort, good food and play. It's my dream partner.

It is beneficial to meet the basic needs of the body. After all, our input is relatively simple. Our body needs nutritious food, clean water and air, movement and rest. Food choices differ for everyone, but a basic rule is to eat as close to the source as possible. The more packaging and processing the less harmonious it is to the body. Filtering your water in some way may be beneficial. Breathing deeply is something you can do any time and any place. Incorporate moving your body more throughout the day by stretching your body and rotating your joints while standing in line at the grocery store or bank. You can also choose the stairs or park further away from your destination. Take 5 minute breaks throughout your day by closing your eyes to focus on your breath. This can be a beneficial respite for the body. Respect your partner and meet its needs as often as possible.

Your body shows you love every day by ALWAYS working for your highest good. Return its affection and walk off into the sunset together. As Stephen Stills suggests, "Love the one you're with."

I partner with my body in a joyous and vital union
